IE's Slowness With Long Threads on Microsoft Forums

$

0

Long threads on this website become very slow to display (as in locking up the browser for literally MINUTES).  But the page displays finally DO complete if you're very patient, indicating it's not an infinite loop.

This is not a new problem, it's obvious to all and it's been discussed here before, with Microsoft's acknowledgement. But amazingly it has only been given minimal attention.  Some forum updates have incrementally decreased the time to display long threads, but the problem remains, literally for years!

I believe it needs to be discussed further.  It cannot be that Microsoft wants IE to work this badly on its own website.  Certainly waiting for threads to display doesn't make our days any brighter.

Here's a fairly long thread you can try it on if you'd like to reproduce the problem for yourself:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w8itprogeneral/thread/3baf6cb4-e21f-41d8-95f7-a06f4fc12076#d454303b-b6f7-42a3-9527-9b676bff26ce

Some observations:

  • It takes MUCH longer (something like 10x longer) if you're logged-in than if you're logged out.

  • Sometimes IE puts up a message that "Microsoft.com is not responding due to a long-running script".  I've seen other browsers put up similar messages.

  • Most times fairly quickly the page will partially render, but without the avatars, etc., then the avatars, points, etc. will fill in much later when the spinner stops, indicating the page display is done.

  • Not every browser is equally slow, though all seem to be affected by whatevernear-infinite loop Microsoft has coded in the web script.

  • The problem seems to be getting no better in the latest versions, even though they claim much faster script processing.  It also seems worse on 64 bit OSs.

Observed logged-in times to display the thread at the link I provided above:

  • Windows XP Pro, IE8:

Page initially went solid blank white.
27 seconds to display the page initially, coincident with a dialog: "A script is running slowly", "Stop this script"?  I answered No.
64 seconds to display the avatars, names, points, etc.

  • Windows Vista 32 bit, IE9:

2.6 seconds to display the page initially
32.4 seconds to display the avatars, names, points, etc.

  • Windows Vista x64, IE9 (on a much less powerful workstation than the others here):

4.8 seconds to display the page initially
175.4 seconds to display the avatars, names, points, etc.

  • Windows 7 32 bit, IE9:

3.2 seconds to display the page initially
31.0 seconds to display the avatars, names, points, etc.

  • Windows 7 64 bit, IE9:

2.8 seconds to display the page initially
43.8 seconds to display the avatars, names, points, etc.

  • Windows 7 64 bit, IE10 (RP):

2.6 seconds to display the page initially
59.4 seconds to display the avatars, names, points, etc.

  • Windows 8 64 bit, IE10:

3.0 seconds to display the page initially
63.6 seconds to display the avatars, names, points, etc.

Since Microsoft doesn't seem to want to try to get to the bottom of this, how about we here have a go at figuring out what's happening using the various profiling and tracing tools?  Wouldn't it be great to be able to browse here more quickly?

Office Documents Format Does Not Preserve When Open With IE 11

Guys,

I am using Windows 7 (32bit) with IE 11 and sometime access my emails through OWA (Outlook Web Access).

When I paste any contents from Excel or Word into OWA message body, it pasted in plan text. It lost formatting.

Even I open any attached document, it also converted into plan text. All formatting have been removed.

Excel to Word, Word to Excel and to Microsoft Outlook all work fine. Formatting lost in IE only.

Any idea? Thanking in advance.

With IE 11 on Win 7 Pro 64 bit, reading PDR online gets IE stuck in loop.

Every time I read a PDF online I can't go back to search results. Clicking the back button just makes the screen flutter a little and takes me to the PDF again. An endless loop. If I use Firefox on the very same PDF it jumps back like it's supposed to. Someone pleas tell me how to fix this. I often read PDFs and this behavior causes me lots of extra trouble.

Hello All.  I am using IE 8 and trying to debug some Javascript.  The page has frames and the script is on a child frame.  The script tab only displays the script for the parent frame.  I see in IE 9 there is a Console.cd command but it is not working in IE8 for me.  Any help appreciated.

cannot download files in IE

I cannot download files similar to what is described in this question.... <Microsoft blocked the link>

I am using Win 7 and IE 11.  When I try to download files, like WinRAR <Microsoft blocked the link> or Firefox <Microsoft blocked the link>.  Files get renamed.  For the winrar example the file gets renamed to "dl_".  Most of the time only the dot before the exe gets renamed but as you can see with the WinRAR example, that is not always the case.

Executables are not the only culprit.   I think the problem happens when the download is initiated by the website, versus right clicking on an img and downloading.  I use TaxAct and the problem happens when trying to download non-executable files from there.  I can only assume that the files are pdf's but the rename of the file prevents me from knowing what type of files they are.

IE 10 problem with .tr5 file extension

$

I am having a problem with IE 10 attempting to open a link in a webpage, where it links to a file with extension .tr5. I have found out that his happens even when I create a simple html file and have the link to the file in there, so for example I use this html file:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<body>

<a href="http://xxx.xxx.xxx/__data/assets/file/0006/1104/Corporate-Organisation-and-Management-Communications-Organisational-Charts-Headquarters-HQ.tr5">
This is a link</a>

</body>
</html>

What happens is that this link is always opening inside IE and I see the contents of this .tr5 file as text, where as I used to see the download prompt on IE 8, and I still see the download prompt on IE 10 through compatibility mode. Interestingly firefox also has the problem where it is opening the content of .tr5 file in the browser itself as text.

The .tr5 file extension itself is set to open with TrimDesktop.exe which is expected, and .tr5 files do open with the correct program. Also, if I were to right click the link to a tr5 file inside IE 10 and choose "save target as", I am allowed to download the file.

As an experiment, I altered the a href link above to point to a new file I made with .xxx extension, and this time I was prompted to download. So it appears that IE10 and firefox are deliberately trying to open these tr5 files within themselves.

Internet Explorer 11 won't set cookies on a site

For some reason IE11 (only IE11, tested with other IE9 and IE10) won't create a session on a site i've been working on. So this means that a basic functionality such as site login won't work.

On other browsers this is working perfectly. The site URL is http://www.tc.mk (also http://www.tc.com.mk)

I researched a bit and found out that IE won't work with domains with underscore.. but my domain doesn't have one so what could be the problem?

Thanks!

PS: Not sure if this is the place to be asking this so sorry if i made a mistake.

IE 11 cumulative security update KB2925418 (win7X64) Breaks IE when Warn if changing between secure & unsecure pages is on

We currently having an issue with IE 11 on systems that upgrade from a IEAK configured IE 8 browser.

If a user upgrades IE 8 to IE 11 and installs the IE 11 cumulative security update KB295418 (win7X64) the user can no longer travel from a HTTPS to HTTPS page, or from HTTPS to HTTP page. If you uncheck the advance setting: Warn if changing between secure & unsecure pages it fixes the issue. It appears that the KB breaks the dialog box that comes up to warn you that you are going to a secure or unsecure page. This dialog box does not appear if you have the KB installed. If the KB is not installed there are no issues, dialog box appears and everything works as it should.

IE 11 popup windows crashing

Hi,

We're experiencing issues with users new machines with IE11.  When a user clicks a link within our internal web application, which is designed to open a new window, it will open the window as expected, but occasionally it will open, and then animate closed as if it has been minimised.  The window will appear in the task bar at the bottom, and an image will be there which is an accurate representation of what the window should look like, but the window can't be opened.  Hovering over the window will put focus back to it, but there is just a white screen, with a spinning wheel in the middle of it.

All other IE tabs/windows that are open then become unstable.  The titles on tabs disappear, and the address bar turns black!  the only way to get IE abck running normally is to close all instances of IE that are open.

As I said this is only happening sometimes, for some users.  Usually (weirdly!) after 4-5 hrs of normal issue free working.

The window is being opened via a normal javascript window.open(), so nothing too taxing there!

Has anyone experienced this or anything like this??  This is only happening with IE11 and the machines are brand new

TIA

Tony

What is the best way to manage a network that has a mix of IE9 and IE10 browsers? Single GPO? GPO + registry? Separate ILT GPO's? Not recommended?

Thank you.

I have had this burning question for a long time.  I have a list of Trusted Sites in mh IE system.  Of them, I microsoft.com, cisco.com, just to name a few!  So, when I go to these sites, it displays a warning or prompt.   "The Current webpage is trying to open a site from your Trusted sites list.Do you want to allows this?"  it then makes me anser yes or no.   Now, MyLogic is that I PUT those on the Trusted List, so that I will NOT have to worry about any prompts etc.    Is there a way to get it so that is STOP prompting when I go to sites I have mannually put in the Trusted List????

IE10 Scrollbar color issue

I have installed IE10 and I am wondering if there is a way to change the color of the scrollbar.  The light grey is so light it's hard to see.  I have tried a few things and searched around and come up with nothing.  I love the preview otherwise and would like to keep it but this one thing might make me use another as I swap back and forth between IE and Comodo Dragon.

Thanks in advance,

Facing severe problem in IE10 of automatically getting clicked on "use a proxy server" every 5 minutes in LAN Settings whereas it is not required to use any proxy server at all when directly connected through ISP broadband.

Using Window 8 Pro with IE 10 but facing tremendous problem in LAN settings. Every 5 minutes, it automatically gets clicked on "Use a Proxy Server for the LAN" and am unable to open any page unless the said setting is unclicked. The same applies while using Chrome or Firefox browsers.... none of the browsers behave properly and have to repeatedly unclick on proxy server settings (in IE or Chrome) and change settings on Firefox.

Any suggestions to get rid of this problem...??? Thanks

Prevent browser session from starting

$

I've automated the installation of a workstation using SCCM. One of the applications that is installed during this process, automatically starts an IE browser session when it's done.

Is there a way to prevent the browser from starting? I tried to kill the process after it started using taskkill.exe in a script. It kills the proces, but when i start the browser after that, it generates the message that the browser hasn't been closed correctly the last time.

If i can't prevent it, is there a way to close the browser in a correct way?

Trusted Zone asks users to open PDF file

Hello,

When a site is in the Intranet Zone and a user clicks on a PDF link, then the PDF file will just open without asking to Open/Download the file.

How can i get the same feature from a site that is in the Trusted Zone. I have tried to compare what settings is being applied in both zones but have not been able to find the one triggering that open/download dialog.

If you reset the Custom Level of the Trusted Zone to Medium-Low then you get the right behavior with no prompts when clicking PDF file in that zone.

Win 7 IE10 "Internet Explorer Branding failed due to the error listed below. The specified procedure could not be found."

Hi All,

I am testing some Windows 7 builds with IE10 installed and when I do a Resultant Set of Policies on them they all have an error in the user section of the GPOs as shown in the image.

To investigate I unlinked all the IE policies from the OU and rebuilt the PCs and wiped the user accounts' roaming profiles (local already wiped with the format of the HDD for the rebuild) but still get the same error even with no IE policies applied. I have looked through RSOP and there are no settings applied either under the maintenance section or under Admin Templates > Windows Components > Internet Explorer.

Please can someone fill me on how to stop this error from showing?

Thanks
