KB3161608 blocks older HTTPS sites on IE11

Hi all,

the current cumulative update KB3161608 blocks older HTTPS sites on IE11, which are not having current TLS/Keylength/Ciphers standards.
This may be reasonable for the Internet, but in our company's intranet it's a desaster, as older programs/applications we are connecting to cannot simply get updated (e.g. Dell DRAC access on older server).
Now we only get a "This page can't be displayed" error.

Two questions:
1. Is this a bug or planned behaviour?
2. Does anyone know what we can do to restore the ability to connect to these sites per IE11 (with KB3161608 installed)?

Web Shortcuts Don't Open From Desktop Since Anniversary Update (IE11)

Web shortcuts don't open from Desktop since Windows 10 Anniversary Update.

With Internet Explorer ‘Enhanced Protected Mode’ switched on, when a shortcut to a webpage is opened from the Desktop, the shortcut doesn’t open.  Internet Explorer just shows a blank window.

With Internet Explorer ‘Enhanced Protected Mode’ switched back off, the shortcuts open as expected.

Was OK before Anniversary Update, so something in the update breaks compatibility with Internet Explorer ‘Enhanced Protected Mode’.

Can't connect to a website over Remote Desktop

Hello,

I am having an issue where one specific website can't connect when I am on a remote desktop connection. It seems to work fine at first after I reboot the remote computer but eventually I always get the This page can't be displayed message and clearing the cache or resetting IE doesn't do anything to remedy it. However if I reboot the machine it again works fine for a little while. It also appear to be just this site and over the remote connection when this happens if I am at the computer it works fine.

I am on a 64 bit Windows 7 professional machine and running Internet Explorer and I have installed all the latest updates installed. The issue seems specific to Internet Explorer as I can reach the site from Chrome when this happens but I would prefer to use IE because the way the site is set up in Chrome is a hole different interface and some of the features don't work the same.

Any suggestions on something I might look for or try to sort this out would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

IE browser title is different in two different environments

Hi,

Currently while developing automation script for a web application I am facing a issue where the Internet explorer window title for the pop-up windows in CRM 2013 is different in two different machine.

In one, the window title is the web link which the pop - up opens. This machine the internet explorer pop - up windows doesn't have a address bar where we can change or edit the address.

in other, the window title is something totally different. In this machine the internet explorer pop - up windows have a address bar where we can change or edit the address.

I would like to know if there is any setting by which I can change the layout / browser UI for IE11. I just want to remove / add the address bar into the pop up pages from CRM 2013.

Not sure how the setting is changed in this second machine. Any help is appreciated.

Difficulties in Installing IE 10 on Windows 8.1

Hi,

I tried to remove IE 11 which comes default with Windows 8.1 (x64) and to install IE 10, but I couldn't find any way to get the IE 10 installer(offline) for Windows 8.1 Pro (x64) :(

I know IE 11 has IE 10 compatibility mode but I need a pure IE 10 browser on my Windows 8.1 workstation for software testing purposes. Could you help me?

Thanks :)

I have a user that when they try to log into Duke Progress Energy's website at https://www.progress-energy.com/app/loginregistration/login.aspx it will redirect them to a "one time authentication" page which requires them to use a one-time key to log in on a new computer.  When going to this one-time website (secure8.i-doxs.net) it will get an error message that says...

This page can't be displayed

Turn on TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1, and TLS 1.2 in the Advanced settings and try connecting to https://secure8.i-doxs.net again.  If this error persists, contact your site administrator.

Well, I'm the site administrator and I can confirm that TLS 1.0, 1.1, and 1.2 are all enabled and forced by GPO.  Restarting IE and rebooting did not help.  Chrome and Firefox both work flawlessly.

Edit: This is IE 11 on Windows 8.1 Enterprise.

IE11 Selecting Unspecified Cipher after 3161608/3172605

We have a Tomcat server that specifies a list of ciphers it accepts, but since the installation of either 3161608 or 3172605, IE keeps trying to use a different cipher, thus failing to reach the site. It keeps trying to use TLS_DHE_RSA_WITH_AES_128_SHA even though the Tomcat server expressly prohibits any DHE cipher unless it's one of the ECDHE ciphers. Chrome uses TLS_RSA_AES_128_SHA which is also in the cipher list the Tomcat server accepts. We can set group policy overriding the cipher order so that users can reach the site, but we can only do that for users within our organization and most of our users are outside the organization. Shouldn't IE be checking the server cipher suites offered and select one of those based upon the workstation's cipher order? Any ideas why this isn't happening, but IE decides to try the connection with the unacceptable cipher instead of one from the list the server provides?

IE9 : Do you want to Open or Save this file prompt

Hi,

I understand there have been a few people who have asked this, but I can't seem to find a definite answer on this.

1. Can this be disabled?

2. If not, why not? What is the security feature or concept behind this prompt making it not possible to to be turned off?

3. If this can't be turned off, what do Microsoft recommend to customers in enterprise environments who have this requirement?  An e.g. is, a SAP database user who regularly has to download numerous pdf/docx files, but this prompt only makes the user environment worse. It sure is very much understandable that regularly downloading files from a particular link, becomes annoying to the user if he/she has to click this prompt every time.

Thanks & Regards,

How do I disable the "Protected mode is currently turned off for the Internet zone" message?

The message is a waste of my screen real estate. Yes, Protected mode is turned off. Sure it is, I turned it off myself, and it will stay off. Now how do I disable this annoying nag message?

Also the messages about File Downloads. Never once in my life I clicked a download link by mistake. Yes, I'm clicking that dang URL, because I wan't to download that dang file, now get out my way, annoying warning message. How do I disable this one too? Thank you in advance

Running security scan takes 20-30 seconds

Hi,

I am having issues with people having the "Running security scan" running for around 20-30 seconds on downloads via Internet Explorer 11. While I totally understand the need for it, I am presuming that it can't be switched off ? (despite people saying to untick "Enable SmartScreen Filter").

The trouble is that this is now becoming an issue for people downloading documents internally from SharePoint servers and SQL Reporting servers - how can I adjust the behaviour of this scan ?

Or are there any updates that have known to cause issues with this (I've checked out the KB3076895 one) ? How does the malware/phishing component of SmartScreen Filter get it's updates or is it an external call to a web site hosted elsewhere ?

Our environment is Windows 7 (tested on Windows 10 and the same thing happens), Office 2010 / Office 2013 (happens in both) and IE11. Any pointers to resolve this issue gratefully received !

Many thanks.

Brian.

Hi, what is the most current and robustly, reliably working browser to use with Windows 10? I have a 2015 HP computer built with Windows 10. I've tried Edge, but too many of the online programs like USPS.com and QuickBooks don't function well thru Edge.  So I switched to Chrome, and now I cannot open gmail.  Which browser can I rely on!!???!?!

Internet Exporer 11: Disable search from address bar (entirely)

$

When we try to use internal websites (sites like hostname.some.subdomain.com:NNNN/some/path/ ) internet explorer 11 shows autocomplete entries for previous visits to those websites, but, when selected, it then searches bing for those URLs, and that makes very little sense to do.

it's an address bar. it's where addresses are typed in. I don't want internal website addresses (frankly, any website addresses) to turn into a bing search. I don't search from the address bar. Ever. In previous versions I could disable that, and in this version that option seems to have been replaced with "go directly if a single word is typed in [intranet site like "home" or "intranet" or "sharepoint", etc.] ", but that doesn't disable the search feature enough to avoid still continuing to search when internal websites are entered/selected in the address bar.

Is there some other place to disable the search, so that addresses typed into the address bar work?

Playready content not working on IE 11

I have windows 8.1 installed with IE 11 and playready content cannot play on it anymore.

I tried removing the contents of "c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\PlayReady\" but it doesn't help.

When I look at the network traffic I see the individualization request and response but that's all, nothing new is created in "c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\PlayReady\".

When I try via the microsoft test player (http://ampdemo.azureedge.net/azuremediaplayer.html?url=%2F%2Famssamples.streaming.mediaservices.windows.net%2Fbf657309-71d9-4436-b94b-8ac0d2ca222b%2FSintelTrailer.ism%2Fmanifest&playready=true) I get an error:

"The video playback was aborted due to a corruption problem or because the video used features your browser did not support" with code "0x20400000".

Any help would be appreciated.

Unable to see 'Office 365 Admin Center Preview' page content in IE11 after SysPrep

I've built a VM in Hyper-V to deploy to five PCs, but when I go to my Office 365 admin page using IE11: I'm unable to see the page content:

Image

As you can see, the page has loaded, but everything below the black header bar is not showing, neither is the tab bar that should run vertically down the left of the page.

I thought this was a Hyper-V problem, but going back to an earlier point in the build shows it's fine.  In fact it's okay up to the point just before running SysPrep.

My next Checkpoint is after SysPrep and first OOBE boot, taken at the point where the 'Hi there' screen prompts you to confirm regional settings:

Image

At this point, if instead of completing the OOBE set-up, I press Clt+Shift+F3 to enter Audit Mode once more, I'm logged on as the built-in Administrator account and the problem's not there. If, however, I do complete the OOBE set-up and log on as my user account (admin), the problem's there.  So something's happening between the start of SysPrep and first user logon, but I don't know what it is or how to fix it.

I'm not sure that entering Audit Mode again after running SysPrep undoes any or all of the changes specified in my Answer File (it's a pretty simple one) so I don't know if it proves anything, but I've tried running Sysprep on a basic VM without the '/unattend' switch to see if it's the same, but SysPrep failed.

IE11 seems to work fine apart from this fault, but I haven't really used it much yet so it's hard to tell - I discovered this problem purely by chance.

I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling IE11 using 'Turn Windows features on or off' - Uncheck IE11 - Restart - 'Turn Windows features on or off'  - Check IE11 - Restart, but this doesn't fix the issue.

Not sure where to go from here.

IE 11 won't display pages with 301 redirects

$

I have some pages that have a Response.StatusCode = 301 in them. IE won't display these pages. Instead I get a default "This page cannot be displayed". If I clear temp files then try a private browsing tab to try again, I get my custom 404 page instead.

I have no idea what is causing this; it does not happen in other browsers.

There are no mistakes; every result tells you something of value about what you are trying to accomplish.
