basic authentication, default domain, & IE

$

Hi all,

This has been asked over the years, but from my searching, never really answered fully

From my testing, it seems like IE insists on appending the local workstation to all basic authentication requests that do not include a domain.  This then invalidates the "Default Domain" setting within IIS for that particular website, causing authentication to fail.  Other browsers don't do this, and the default domain setting works fine.

Test scenario:  Computer not joined to the domain hits a basic authentication website.  Authentication prompt reads  "Username:  Password:   and text on bottom reads Domain:  WORKSTATIONNAME" .  User supplies only username and password.  Server logs an attempt to authenticate to a domain identical to the workstation name, and fails.

There's no way around this, correct?   Default domain specification just doesn't work with IE & Basic Authentication?

Thanks for your help.

Cannot download anything including Updates

Hello.
I've inherited a Windows Server 2008 r2 Foundation Server.  My first task at hand was to catch up on updates.  I installed the first 16 or so that were already in the queue.  Right after the needed restart, now I'm not able to download anything - including checking for more updates.  I've disabled IE ESC, I've double-checked the security settings of IE, I've even uninstalled the updates previously installed hoping it'd self-correct itself.  Nothing.  When I try and run Microsoft Updates, I'm told the service is not running, when in essence it is.
There is a driver update needed, and when I'm posed with the "open" or save as requests in IE11, nothing happens.  I can however install things from Media locally.

Thanks for any input in advance.

Joe.

Configure Auto-Config-URL for multiple users using Local Policies for IE10 and UP?

For Windows 7 with IE version 10 and 11 local group policy (gpedit.msc) no longer has "Internet Explorer Maintenance" section.

Under User Configuration/Windows Components/Internet Explorer you can disable changing Auto-Configuration but doesn't seem to be a way to set it.

So how would you set it in that case?

Internet Explorer 9 stops using PAC File

Hi,

several machines that have Internet Explorer 9 installed suddenly stopped connecting to the internet using a PAC file. Chrome as well as Firefox work with the PAC file set in IE, setting a static proxy adress in the Proxyserver field in IE works too for all browsers including IE9.

I tried reverting to IE 8 which seems to accept the PAC, after reinstalling IE9 it stops working again, i tried both a local file as well as a PAC hosted on a web server, to no avail. PAC file is tested on all 3 browsers and works on 99% of the Win 7 computers, so its not a problem with the syntax, im at a loss of idea here.

Path set for the PAC File://C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\Proxy.pac

Does someone have an idea how to fix this or some way to troubleshoot this problem any further?

Thanks in advance.

Run as different user

Hello,

my Boss gave me the job to serach for a way to do the following:

We want to start IE with a user who's having only a minimum of rights.

On the first view I thought easy to do: Just start IE with run as.

But their are two many ways to start IE that this is not possible to garantuee that IE is only started as this "minimum right's user".

So perhaps their is a GPO which can handle such things.

A second Problem is, that we use SSO for some portals. I think this want work then.

IE 10 not working in "Metro"...desktop works fine

Windows 8 Enterprise 64-bit, with all patches through December, running on Lenove X200T...IE 10 working fine on the desktop, but not at all in Metro/Modern/Windows 8Store/whatever version. It simply does not open a window when I select it...Task Manager does not show any IE running. All works perfectly well in the desktop.

It was running prior to the December patches, which sort of points to the issue, but I would rather not remove a security patch...not that fond of browsing in that version anyway.

Has anyone else noticed this issue, and if so, is there a resolution.

Regards,

   John

IE 9.0 doesn't show updated PDF instead shows from cached version

IE 9.0 always shows cached version of PDF file not updated one. Can i know what is the cause of this issue in IE. Actually same issue was occur in IE 8.0 but i've changed security setting to default. As a result, IE8.0 shows updated PDF not from cache version. But same workaround doesn't sort out this issue in IE 9.0.

I'd appreciate to providing solution to this.

Automatic proxy configuration via WPAD not working

Dear all,

I have a problem working with WPAD in Internet Explorer that shows like this:

- our test environment includes an ISA server that is used as proxy in a wpad.dat file
- wpad.dat is not located on the ISA server but on another server with IIS installed
- wpad.dat (or, in this case, proxy.pac) file works fine - I know this from placing its URL in the registry value
"AutoConfigURL" on a workstation and deleting existing values
  "ProxyServer" and "ProxyOverride"
- DNS entry for WPAD exists and points to the IP address of the server hosting wpad.dat

When I delete all existing registry values on a workstation that configure proxy settings (ProxyServer and ProxyOverride or AutoConfigURL) I cannot access the web, so I guess that wpad.dat is not found or the configured settings in it are not loaded. Browsing to http: // wpad / wpad.dat (without blanks) gives me the opportunity to download the file and if I do so I can see that it is the one I created.

What am I missing here?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Regards,

Klaus

IE 10 spawns multiple browser windows

This problem occurs the day after we release patches each month.
From time to time, when users login and get their desktop, IE spawns a bunch of
browser windows (20+) and the users have to close them out.  What is the cause and how do you stop this behavior?

Allow blocked content (Javascript) on local HTML files IE11

We are moving from IE8 to IE11 and one of our users is having a problem viewinglocally saved HTML files since they had IE11 installed.

In IE8 when they open the HTML files they receive a prompt to "Allow Blocked Content" which is accepted, and then the page displays.

In IE11 (with exactly the same settings as in IE8) the page opens then hangs. When I press F12 and go to debugging it says "It appears that you may have JavaScript disabled) but it is enabled.

When I open this page as a local administrator I do get a prompt to allow blocked content. When I click on that I get a message "It appears that you may have JavaScript disabled". Again, I can confirm "Active Scripting" is enabled.

Any ideas anyone please!?

Cannot install any version of IE

Hi there,

I am having some issues with one of our Terminal Servers, which is running Windows Server 2008 R2 64bit. It did have IE9 installed and when tried to upgrade this to IE10 or IE11 it was failing with the error "Internet Explorer did not finish installing".

There is no much helpful info in the event logs either.

So, following some other advice on here, I was pointed to the fact it could be that IE9 was corrupt and could be upgraded. I was advised to remove IE9 and try installing it again and then go through the upgrade process. However, there is an issue here. Once IE9 was removed (through Uninstall an update in Control Panel), IE8 wasn't there. I still cannot install IE 9, 10 or 11 on this server now. What's also a concern is that now I cannot open Event Viewer or any other MMC as it shows an error about MMC will not run with a version of Internet Explorer earlier than IE 5.5.

Any tips or ideas on how to resolve this?

"http://www.meetup.com" Freezes IE 11

On IE 11, trying to access http://www.meetup.com puts my system, Windows 8.1 with the latest updates, in a non-responsive state requiring forced reboot. Not sure how to diagnose the problem since the system freezes up. Up to just recently, everything, the site and machine were response. Was able to use my Windows 8.1 Phone IE with no problems. Any ideas.

Very specific group policy for IE 11

Got a very interesting GPO I need created. I need a GPO that forces all users on a certain machine to use InPrivate browsing at all times while they are using IE. Or even for a specific website.

I have an application that has a bug that is fixed by using private browsing, weirdly enough. To limit problems with users saying "But I did use private browsing" I would ideally like to force the use of it while they are on the machine. If I have to apply it to a specific group, that will be fine too, but the end result needs to be private browsing they cannot turn off at all.

Any suggestions? Open to Powershell solutions, or creative options.

Can't change ie 11 to 10

I have 8.1 on my hp envy laptop (year old) and my company needs me to go back to ie 10 so their program will work. I read several discussions on this but none helped.

It shows up nowhere on the "updates" so I can't click it there. I turned 11 off in windows features. I restarted. Nowhere is there an internet explorer anywhere. I even used ccleaner to clean the registry. No internet explorer of any kind shows up in the list of programs for me to uninstall

But every time I try to run the ie10 setup it says ie10 is already installed on my computer.

I HAVE to get this issue fixed!!! Please help!

What happened to IE 10 For Windows 7?

$

I know IE 10 will reach end of support in January 2016, but *today* it is still supported and we are not upgrading to IE 11 until near the end of 2015.

I notice I no longer see an option to install IE 10 to upgrade IE 8 when checking for updates online from a Windows 7 x64 system.

I also searched online and all the Microsoft IE 10 pages now redirect to IE 11 pages.

I finally found a download for IE 10 on the updates catalog site, downloaded and installed it, then went back to check for updates online again and Windows Updates still isn't offering any security updates to IE 10.  It still just keeps prompting to install IE 11.

Unless the IE 10 download from the catalog site slipstreamed all the updates into it during installation, the machine is missing a ton of security updates for IE 10.

What is going on with this??!!
