KB2988414 and default search provider via INSTALL.INS

$

I use Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK) to preset search providers.

IEAK lets you nominate the default search provider (the one I have preset isn't Bing).

This creates [SearchProviders] in an INSTALL.INS file.  You can transfer this to

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\SIGNUP\install.ins

Before installing KB2988414, this process "just works".

After installing KB2988414, when you logon with a new profile, which triggers the Internet Explorer new profile process, Internet Explorer shows

An unknown program would like to change your default search provider to "[provider]"

However, this is a legitimate, Microsoft-provided process, not malicious software.

If I remove the following parameter from the [SearchProviders] block, then I no longer get the message, but the search provider defaults to Bing.

Default1=1

I believe this is a defect.

Kind regards,

Anwar

Issues with Server 2008 R2 GPO Settings Being Applied To Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 7

We are working on a new domain and I'm trying to figure out how to populate the default Home page, Trusted Sites and the Proxy now that Microsoft has removed the IEM from the GPO's.

I have created a standalone policy that only has these items set in the User Configuration Preferences and the settings are not updating for my test user account on the test system.  I see the policy is being applied without any errors.  The only other GPO that is being applied to this system is the Default Domain Policy and it is at the default settings.

Why would Microsoft take away such a basic and fundamental administrative function?  I'm trying to figure this out before all support ends for the older versions of IE in January, 2016.  I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to get this configured so I don't have to touch every system.

PAC File Load issue with Microsoft IE

$

We use PAC files with our Proxy SG's and lately when we make changes to the PAC file Microsoft IE does not seem to download the new file or if it does IE still for some reason will not work correctly and allow the new entry. Only after several clear caches, ctrl+f5 or reboots does IE start correctly reading the new PAC file.

Any suggestions on why this is happening with IE? None of the other browsers Chrome or Firefox exhibit this behavior.

Thank you for your help.

Unable to Create, See, Import or Export Favorites from IE 9 on a Vista Business system

I don't know when this happened.  The machine normally runs unattended and was used infrequently.  I just had a need to use it and when I went to use IE 9 there was no favorites visible.  Attempts to import a copy of previously exported favorites it allows the process to go to the point where select the htm file to import. At this point you get a screen that asks where you want to put store it. ???  The text box displayed is protected and can not be typed in.  I would not expect to be asked to provide a target in any case.  There are no buttons, etc.  Just a stop and no activity.   Attempts to export result in a very similar experience.

When running and when to tell IE to save a site address in favorites it seems to do it but nothing is ever displayed nor can I find any favorites at all.   The same thing happens if I attempted to target the bookmarkbar which is also not visible.

Re-installed IE 9 twice, no help.

WindowStateChanged not being fired in IE 10 BHO, but being fired in IE 9 and IE 11

I write an IE BHO object, listening on a few events defined in DWebBrowserEvent2.

Here are the events.

BEGIN_SINK_MAP(CBHO)
    SINK_ENTRY_EX(1, DIID_DWebBrowserEvents2, DISPID_DOCUMENTCOMPLETE, OnDocumentComplete)
    SINK_ENTRY_EX(1, DIID_DWebBrowserEvents2, DISPID_ONQUIT, OnQuit)
    SINK_ENTRY_EX(1, DIID_DWebBrowserEvents2, DISPID_WINDOWSTATECHANGED, OnWindowStateChanged)
END_SINK_MAP()

And I register to sink these events, coded in SetSite method of BHO object.

HRESULT hr = DispEventAdvise(_browser);
It works well in IE 9 and IE 11. But in IE 10, only DocumentComplete event and Quit event are fired, while WindowStateChanged event is never fired. Can't figure out why. Anyone can help? Thanks.

How to make 32-bit-only add-ons work with Windows 7, Internet Explorer 11 and Enhanced Protected Mode enabled?

Hi everybody,

in IE10 I had the chance to use 32-bit-tabs even with EPM. In IE11 my 32-bit add-ons are all marked as "incompatible".

Do you have any suggestions?

hi,

I am getting the following message when am trying to change the search provider in IE.

I appreciate your help in advance.

Basic vs Negotiate Authentication.

Good Day.

I am observing different behaviour on several client PCs; it looks like different versions of Ie.

if a website is protected as follows  - what are the decision matrices used by IE to select either Basic or Negotiate, assuming it can do both ?

I have some PCs on a domain,  W8+ie10 - uses basic,  W7+IE9 uses negotiate.  In all cases they are in Internet Sites with Integrated Authentication,   they do NOT have kerberos tickets for the domain being logged onto and we are using "Automatic Logon with Current User and Password".   It appears there is a setting or change in versions that forces IE to incorrectly select Negotiate when it should use basic.

The question is, what has changed ?  I tried ETS tracing on WinInet but all it told me was it had selected Negotiate or Basic, but not WHY.   Second Question : is there tracing logic to see why it is picking one or the other ?

JPG file opens fine on server and fine in Google Chrome but Upside Down in IE11

We have a jpg file that is on a server. When you link directly to the file so that there is no HTML or CSS code, it opens fine in Google Chrome but IE is flipping it upside down.  I have access to the server itself, the computer with the jpg file on it, and when I open it in file explorer (not internet explorer) it opens in the default picture view program just fine.  The picture was taken with an iPhone.  Is there a way to disable this unwanted picture flipping in IE?

Unable to browse webservice from IE 8 and above.

I am trying to access a third party webservice over HTTPS from IE 8 but get the error:

Unable to download xxx.wsdl from xxx.com

Unable to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.

The funny thing is that this happens only for the first time in each tab/window. If I try to just open the same URL again in same tab, it will open just fine.

Enhanced Security Config is not enabled for IE. Nothing in event logs. No errors in Wireshark or Procmon. The third party web service host also doesnt see any errors for this request. OS is Win 2008 R2. It runs perfectly fine on Win 2003. We have MSXML 4.0 SP2 and .net 4.0 installed on the server.

Lost Default Search Engine Control Due to KB2988414

Has there been any update regarding the loss of search engine management that KB2988414 forced on us??? Simply put I cannot manage changing the search engine in WIN7x64 ENT images without them being changed back. I have tried the IEAK, GP, AutoUnattend.xml, assorted scripts, assorted reg settings all with no success.

here is another reference and an acknowledgment of the issue:

Windows Internet Proxy Settings

$

I have an interesting issue with a policy that controls our Proxy settings.

We have a proxy server in house and all of our users should be passing through this server.

However here's the interesting part, only our laptops are hitting the proxy server while none of the desktops are.  Whats more confusing is that I have a couple VMs on my desktop that I use to test these policies on before sending them out and, in this case, both act as a laptop as they hit the proxy server.  All computers are receiving the same settings which are a couple of registry settings to manually use the proxy and if away from work ignore the settings and act normal, in the case of laptops away from the office.

The VMs are Windows 7 Pro with IE8 and Windows 8 Pro with IE11.  All desktop PCs use IE10 or IE11.  As for users, I have a test user that if I log on locally to my PC (Win8Pro/IE11) I can bypass the proxy and go to a known blacklisted site. If I use this same user on either a laptop or on the VMs, I hit the proxy and get the access denied page from the server when going to the same site.

Registry settings are as follows:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

> ProxyEnable - REG_DWORD - 0

> ProxyOverride - REG_SZ - <local>

> ProxyServer - REG_SZ - :80

HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel

> Proxy - REG_DWORD - 1

> AutoConfig - REG_DWORD - 1

Any pointers would be appreciated.

IE11: Cannot download files or add search providers

$

I am cleaning a friend's Windows 7 SP1 laptop that got infected with a bunch of Conduit and MySearch toolbars. I cleaned it with MalwareBytes, AdwCleaner and MS Safety Scanner, dumped Norton and got MSE. I then noticed some issues with Internet Explorer 11:

  • I can't download files. Clicking a link or right-click and "Save target as..." does nothing. No errors, prompts, toasts or anything. Acts like I did nothing. Images can still be saved.
  • I can't open the download manager. Neither the menu option nor Ctrl-J do anything at all. Entering "shell:downloads" in the address bar opens the Downloads folder in Explorer, but I can't get to the normal download manager.
  • I can't add a search provider. Adding through the gallery or using a button on a search engine's homepage results in the message "The search provider could not be installed." It suggests that a required file couldn't be downloaded, the site is not available, or I'm not connected to the Internet.
  • Search suggestions don't work, at least for Bing, the only search provider I can get. They also didn't work when I copied in the registry entries from a Win8 machine to add Google manually. I just get "[search provider] Suggestions: An error occurred."
  • Search providers don't have their icons. I currently have 2 copies of Bing, and both just have a generic magnifying glass icon.
  • Browsing is very often slow. Every page load stalls for a few extra seconds on "Waiting for [site]...". I'm pretty sure it's not a problem with the network in general or with the whole system. Both IE on other computers and Chrome on this computer load pages without this delay.

So far, I have tried:

  • Started with add-ons disabled and/or run as administrator.
  • Cleared personal stuff, reset IE.
  • Disabled and re-enabled IE in "Turn Windows features on or off".
  • sfc /scannow says everything is okay. Before running the System Update Readiness Tool it said there were corrupted files it couldn't fix.
  • Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth, which found 4 "corrupted" packages that according to http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_update/cbs-mum-package-naming-issue-causing-false/9cd9b2e0-0377-46dc-9d2b-5b9d7fedac4a are false positives caused by differing number of tildes in their names. Apart from those 4 it gave the system a clean bill of health. System Update Readiness Tool says the same thing.
  • Uninstalled IE11 through "Uninstall a program", in the Windows Updates section. I now had IE10, which exhibited exactly the same issues. Attempting to reinstall IE11 resulted in an unspecified error.
  • Uninstalled IE10 the same way, hoping to revert to IE9 or 8 and reinstall from there. I now found myself with no Internet Explorer at all. "Windows cannot find 'iexplore'", remaining shortcuts like the no-addons one were broken, and it was even missing from "Turn Windows features on or off". Attempting to reinstall IE10 or IE11 failed. I couldn't find a download of IE9.
  • Used System Restore to bring back IE11. Obviously this returned everything to the broken state it was in before I uninstalled.

Anyone have anything else I can try? (And no, there aren't any restore points from before the toolbars got in.)

Internet Explorer downloading/saving PDF rather than opening?

Hi there,

We are seeing quite a few users in our company getting a prompt to save the PDF they want to open, instead of it just opening. I can't find the setting to change this anywhere.

Does anyone know where the setting is or where the registry key is?

Also does anyone know how to disable the open confirmation prompt (orange bar along the bottom).

Thanks :)

PAC File Load issue with Microsoft IE

$

We are using .pac files for our proxies and when we make a change to the .pac file  users who use IE receive the new version of the .pac file but, the change that was made does not work its as if the old version of the .pac file is still there. After clearing cache and doing ctrl+f5's or a reboot, the user finally can access the change what was made to the pac file.

Also, other browsers like Chrome and Firefox work fine with the updated .pac file no issues with clearing cache etc...

Any suggestions on what I can check for or do to help this issue?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Tom.
