Pasting Text Copied from IE11 Crashes Word 2003

Got a question today from a user running Windows 8.1 x64 and Word 2003.

Every time he copies text from Internet Explorer 11, and tries to paste it into Word, Word crashes with this error:

Faulting application name: WINWORD.EXE, version: 11.0.8407.0, time stamp: 0x521bd0da
Faulting module name: AcGenral.DLL, version: 6.3.9600.16441, time stamp: 0x5265e8c9

We tried all the typical stuff, such as running the "Detect and Repair" facility, and even went so far as to delete the registry keys for the Word configuration under Office\11.0 to get it to create a new, default set of parameters, but the problem remains.  Compatibility settings do not help either.  There are no add-ons.

At this point he can paste the exact same text from Safari - the problem seems to be isolated to just IE11.

I'm even able to paste text from IE11 into Word 2003 on a Windows 8.1 x64 test setup.

I know Office 2003 is all but obsolete, and he's going to be looking into getting a newer version, but there are some problems with just telling him to "upgrade and be done with it".

Anyone here have any suggestions, short of "uninstall and start over"?  Thanks in advance.
