Hi,
I got a problem with the Internet Explorer 11 installation I received through Windows Update. It is on aWindows 7 x64 SP1 computer.
The installation failed, and Internet Explorer 11 doesn't appear under the Show Installed Updates section of Programs and Features.
Because of that, Windows Update tries to re-run the update, but keeps failing everytime.
My first idea was to download the IE 11 installer for Windows 7 x64 from Download Center and launch it; it fails with the error message "A more recent version of Internet Explorer is already installed".
When launching IE, effectively, the version is 11.0, but if I try to install an update for IE, like an IE 11 language pack or just a security update, it fails saying it doesn't apply to this system.
So basically, the IE installer detection logic says IE 11 is installed, while Windows Update says it is not, as for other updates related to IE 11. I have a tendency to believe Windows Update since it doesn't appear in Show Installed Updates.
I tried removing the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer registry key and its equivalent under SYSWOW64, no result. I also deleted the iexplore.exe file under Program Files\Internet Explorer and Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer, no result. Removing those files is not easy since you have to take ownership on each of them because of the default permissions that are very tight.
Does someone knows the detection logic of the IE 11 installer and tell me what I must do to force it to run and reinstall everything? Or someone who got the same issue and was able to recover from it?
I repeat, no need to tell me that I must remove it from Installed Updates under Programs and Features first, it is not there and this is probably why Windows Update tries to reinstall it every time.
Tnx for help
Patrick
