Keeping up with the times

Microsoft forces IE or Edge to be our default browser, but it recommends Google Chrome when using their products.  Why are they unable to keep their products up-to-date with new technologies so we can continue to use their products seamlessly?

Our company website and many online software products are designed using HTML.  They are not functionally compatible with Edge or IE and must also use Google Chrome.  Perhaps they should get out of the browser business completely if they can't keep up with the times.

Cookies C# asp.net not persisted IE 11 after update Windows 10.0.17134 Build 17134

Trying to be short but giving as much detail as possible.

So we have to update to Windows 10.0.17134 as a corporation. When installing it on a few machines they all quickly experienced the same issue. IE 11 is not persisting cookies on the local intranet anymore. So nothing like saving what language a user is using, other user preferences. It does this in test, production and development environments. It is completely repeatable simply upgrade to Windows 10.0.17134, after the reboot, cookies are no longer persisted.

Ok, so simple cookie. Written from ASP.net site.

Response.Cookies["AutoLogin"].Value = "true";
Response.Cookies["AutoLogin"].Expires = DateTime.Now.AddDays(365);

This site has been upgraded several time though out history originally a .net 1.1 site. But the above code has worked now for 18 years. Newer cookies I create the full cookie object and write it down in one response. Either way, this works in all windows versions prior to the one in the title and still works on all those.

Now when I go to the site after upgrading the cookie is not there. No matter, if it is not there it will create the cookies again. I can see the cookies in the trace.axd file on the server and fiddler on the client after they have been created. They stay as long as the user has the browser open. The minute I close the browser and then reopen it. All cookies are gone. The are not in fiddler, they do not show up in the trace.axd on the server Cookies are completely blank.

Now this is an intranet site. So the settings should be affected by the intranet zone. So I have messed with a ton of browser settings to see what I can do. If I do turn on protected mode in the local intranet zone. Cookies are persisted and saved just like before. However, I have other 3rd party internal sites that need to have this disabled so I can not leave it enabled. All prior versions of windows, IE etc protected mode is disabled. So something is off here. Something changed.

Now to muddy the waters a little more I am not sure why Microsoft does this. So Before the windows Update IE was version 11.611.16299.0 After the windows update, IE is back to 11.112.17134.0 so it seems upgrading windows actually downgraded IE.

However, the Updated version is newer. When digging into what the difference is between version and updated version I did find that Updated version is security fixes only, where Version is functionality. No where can I find how to update the actual function version of IE to get back to the 11.611 of the prior version of windows. Windows Updates says I am up to date.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I am not sure if it is the Version of IE that is the issue, if it is Cookie issue, like I said works in prior versions of windows, also works in Chrome and Netscape fine

Save picture as option only allows PNG and BMP, not JPG

When using the same website on a freshly imaged Windows 10 machine, when I go to "Save picture as" from right-clicking a picture in IE11 and Edge, it only allows me to save the picture as a PNG and BMP, but the picture is really a JPG.  Both Firefox and Chrome allow me to save it as a JPG.

Any idea why IE and Edge will not allow me to save the image in the format it actually is like every other browser I try?

Using vaultcmd To Create Web Credentials

$

Hi,

I am trying to create a logon script for Windows 8.1 using vaultcmd for a few users that will populate web credentials.

The command I'm using is formatted like this:

vaultcmd /addcreds:"Web Credentials"

/credtype:"Windows Web Password Credential"

/identity:email@domain.com /authenticator:password

/resource:"https://www.website.com/"/savedBy:"Internet Explorer"

It creates the credentials in the Credential Manager, but they do not populate when I surf to the website.

When I save the credentials using IE11, a file for the credentials is created in the same location, and the credentials look identical to ones created by vaultcmd in the Credential Manager.

However, when I create the credentials with IE, they populate on the site and everything works as intended.

What might I be doing wrong?

Hello

I work as part of a IT team within a organization that has 200+ Windows 8.1 devices, recently we have been experiencing a problem when downloading files using Internet Explorer 11.

You click the file to download (word document,PDF etc) and you get the yellow bar at the bottom asking you to open save etc but when you select any of the options nothing happens and this is becoming increasingly more common.

I cant believe we are the only people to have this issue but i have searched and cant find any answers.

I hope somebody can help us.

Thanks,

How to change the numbers that are between a slash ?

Hello Everyone !

i used to work with IE 9 and now after updating to 11 i got a problem

in IE 9, the data that contains slash shows me vice versa, but when i updated to 11, the new one works well,

unfortunately our users got used to work with vice versa information.

I'm talking about Numbers.

for example the number is 15/14 that IE9 shows you 14/15 and IE11 shows you 15/14

i need to set IE11 to behave like IE9 in this case

I met the local group policy but there is no option about it.

How can i resolve it ?

Thank you all.

Can't set custom levels

I have a server 2016 server that a couple of the users cannot set a custom level of security in IE and they cannot add sites to the whitelist. I have looked and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\Security_HKLM_Only keeps on getting reset to 1 from 0. I think this is happening when I open IE. I have looked through gpos, rsop, etc. I dont know what is causing this. Can someone help me?

Internet Explorer 11 stops responding and gives recover webpage error while on outlook.office365.com

$

This will occur intermittently, but consistently. If a user is switching between emails or trying to download an attachment, Internet Explorer will stop responding and prompt you to "recover webpage." If you let it go for a few minutes, it may respond finally, or may not and need to be recovered.

I have tried deleting browsing history and clearing the cache, running IE11 without addons, and fiddling with numerous settings. This only occurs on machines with a certain Group Policy, and the only difference in Internet Options Advanced settings is "Use software rendering instead of GPU rendering" is checked on the affected machines, but not on my machine, where it works fine (though somewhat slow). Our Group Policy resets the Internet Options settings upon restarting, so I am not currently able to test if this is the culprit without consulting the network admin first.

I have included the Windows Event Viewer logs for these errors if it helps.

Hi,

Need your help.

Can no longer open CHM files across the local network after installing CU for Windows 1709 for x64 Systems (KB4103727)

$

We had previously used a group policy preference to set the following registry value, which allows the opening of CHM or Windows Help files from network paths.  We also place the network paths in the Local Intranet zone in IE, although it should automatically detect it as local anyway.

SOFTWARE\Microsoft\HTMLHelp\1.x\ItssRestrictions\MaxAllowedZone (DWORD) = 1

This works perfectly for all of our users, until we install KB4103727.  After this we get a, "Can't reach this page error" from our CHM files.

I double checked the registry and the Local Intranet zone in IE and everything looks like it should.
