Auto-Discovery of WPAD over VPN

$

Hi All

Have a very strange and frustrating problem.

We have just changed our group policy away from telling client IE to use a "Automatic Configuration Script" to "Automatically Detect settings"

We have circa 2000 laptops in and desktops in our estate and for 95% of them everything works flawlessly. We do however have a handful of laptops that will not auto-discover the WPAD.dat file when they connect over VPN from home. These same users however detect the WPAD file when they are on the LAN no problem. To complicate matters further if we connect their laptops to a little router with a direct internet connection we have in the office and then make the VPN from there it also works fine.

When they are connected from home over VPN they can ping wpad and they get the correct answer, they can also browser tohttp://servername/wpad.dat and the wpad file opens with no issues but they cannot access the internet.

On the affected users machines we have been looking in the registry at the following key.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

In here we have done the following.

1. Created the wpadoverride registry key on their machines and it must be stated that in some cases this has addressed the problem but there are some users who it doesnt have any affect on.

2. We have also deleted the DefaultConnectionSettings and SavedLegacySettings keys

3. Deleted the whole WPAD folder and let it re-create

In addition to the above we have also removed the users wireless network, wireless adapter and let windows re-connect and re-create as we believe the issue is related to something telling IE on that users machine not to use WPAD for that one network despite the registry keys above saying otherwise.

Has anyone came across this type of issue before?

Of course we can change the group policy to use the automatic configuration script and just to point out if we puthttp://servername/wpad.dat into that on the affected users machine it works perfectly. We are however trying to avoid that do it the way it is designed to.

Any advice gratefully received.

All the above are turned on

Is an error message I get when I try to log into 2 websites.  When I call they said both sites have been updated.  I can't get in with chrome or firefox as well.

HELP!!!  Thanks

On our windows 8.1 systems are not showing the GIF image boxes in IE 11.  Firefox and Chrome can show the images.  IE v11 will show the images if we launch IE as an Administrator or if Protect Mode is off for MSN.  Is this something that can be resolved at the workstation or is it a Network Setting on the Domain Server?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Cookie issues with IE8 + IE10

Hello guys,

our users are experiencing problems when logging into an external identity provider via our ADFS 3.0 running on W20012R2.

This only happens in some versions of Internet Explorer where the ADFS context cookie (MSISContext) is not set in the browser and therefore not sent in subsequent requests, which in turn leads toADFS 3.0 not being able to correlate the request to the external Claims provider and the response received from the external Claims provider.

On all other browsers (Chrome, Firefox, etc) this works independent of version. When we add *.mysite.com to trusted sites (https) it works. Mysite.com is the domain used by both web shop and ADFS.

Any idea?

Thanks!

Managed .NET Control inside IE no longer works after installing .NET 4.5 RTM

Hi!

There's been a change in the behavior of .NET controls hosted inside Internet Explorer after installing .NET 4.5 RTM:

Prior to to installing .NET 4.5 , the .NET control (.NET Framework 2.0) was downloaded from the server, the CAS policy was checked and the control (embedded using an object tag with the server-path as the ClassID) executed. This continued to work in .NET 4.5 RC but broke once .NET 4.5 RTM was installed.

See also here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/12109642/loading-net-usercontrols-in-ie-with-net-4-5

There is information about .NET 4.5 compatibility posted here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh367887.aspx (under Web Applications). It recommends using a registry key to re-enable the previous behavior. Unfortunately, the registry key does not have an effect. Is the documentation incomplete or is this a different issue?

Internet browsing is very slow with internet explorer

Hi All,

In our environment, we face some problem with internet browsing with internet explorer. We use IE 10. Internet browsing is perfect with other browsers ( i.e. Mozilla, Google Chrome). but it is slow in IE on the same computers. I have done user profile reset and then the performance of IE is improved, but after 2 weeks again the same slowness. I also have checked that in Private browsing mode of IE, it works well. So I made some changes on IE. the settings are allowing the deleting browser history and browser cache on exit. I have disabled allow websites to store application caches on client computers and allow websites to store indexed internet browsing with IE. But no changes is observed after that. The slowness is mostly faced with the sites likehttp://telegraph.nl

Can someone help me with any suggestion for this?

IE 11 crashes UNLESS laptop is connected to docking station

$

Yeah, the title pretty much says it all. I've got one end user who can only run IE if the laptop is connected to the docking station. If not, IE crashes with the "IE has stopped working" generic message and you gotta end task on it. To clarify: Laptop on battery, IE crash. On ac adapter, crash. Immediately plug laptop into docking station just after it's suffered the crash, IE works fine! the only difference I see in the docking station scenario is that there would be some voltage differences on the incoming current via the pins, but why would IE be affected by that? I'm not even sure I'm right about the voltage but it's all I've thought of so far.

Laptop is a Dell latitude E6420

Windows 7 pro

IE 11

I haven't been able to look at the event viewer yet because the end-user can't give up the laptop yet (She's got firefox as a backup). I only have the information presented above, after seeing the end user for 5 minutes and getting a demonstration of the problem. When she's back from the field, I'll reset the power options back to default, bios too and/or update it. I'm posting here in the hope that it's a known issue I don't know about...

thanks!

Minimize to Partial Screen View

How do I minimize the IE 11 window to take up only a portion of the screen? During the day, I have only one monitor and I would like to have IE 11 window open but only taking up a portion of the screen so that I can still see my miniplayer for my music app. I only see a full minimize (-) button on IE 11, I don't see the two little boxes that indicate a window reduce size instead of full minimize.

IE Per User Initialization Has Stopped working when upgrading to IE11

Hello Fellow Technicians,

I was wondering if you could assist me with an issue that I am experiencing with our IE11 upgrade.

We are upgrading IE11 (via SCCM 2012 R2) to our Win 7 Pro x64 machines that are currently running IE9.  We used the IEAK to create the package that SCCM deployed and are now running into an issue whereby following the deployment, users are logging on to the desktop and are met with the following message:

"IE Per User initialization has stopped working".  Close the Program

Explorer.exe is not running as there is no taskbar and the desktop is not loaded.

If the user clicks on "Close the Program" then the loading continues and Explorer.exe kicks in and the desktop loads normally.  IE11 then appears to function normally.  However given that the message appears for any user that it's deployed to we cannot continue with our deployment in it's current form.

Procmon cannot be run as Explorer.exe hasn't launched for me to be able to capture it.  The message is literally there straight after the logon splash screen disappears and the desktop attempts to load.

Troubleshooting steps I have tried so far:

  • Changed the Install behavior on SCCM so to install "As the user", "Whether or not the user is logged on" and "Only when the user is logged off" = All still get the issue.
  • Deployed as a task sequence with 2 reboots at the end = Still get the issue
  • Used the native IE11 Setup.exe with the /passive /norestart switch = Still get the issue.
  • Installed manually using the native IE11 Setup.exe = Still get the issue
  • Manual install using the native IE11 Setup.exe on to a Vanilla Win 7 Pro x64 image (with no updates or additional software) = Still get the issue

In the event log the following message appears:

Faulting application name: ie4uinit.exe, version: 11.0.9600.17728, time stamp: 0x550254a0

Faulting module name: KERNELBASE.dll, version: 6.1.7601.18847, time stamp: 0x554d7df1

Exception code: 0xc0000005

Fault offset: 0x0000000000001a93

Faulting process id: 0x7a0

Faulting application start time: 0x01d0af54a7dd1631

Faulting application path: C:\Windows\System32\ie4uinit.exe

Faulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\KERNELBASE.dll

Report Id: e5bdfdb3-1b47-11e5-9cbb-000c29ae385f

Because we use some security products I have been able to ascertain that literally a second before the error in the event log the following command is run:

Command Line: "C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe" /D /C start C:\WINDOWS\system32\ie4uinit.exe -ClearIconCache

After doing lots of searches on the interweb, I came across a post that suggested deleting the following keys:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{2D46B6DC-2207-486B-B523-A557E6D54B47}

And the 32-Bit equivalent key as well.

I did this after IE11 had installed and the machine rebooted but BEFORE the user logged on.  The prompt disappeared but IE11 didn't behave as it should do (we use GPO to set the homepage but IE11 was ignoring this and going straight to MSN), so we cannot use this as a solution.

Has anyone else run into the same problem out there?  I am drawing a blank here.

Install IE package with IEAK with updated version

Windows 7 x64

Hi,

I have created IE 11 Package (msi or full exe file), but when I install through SCCM or manually, only RTM version get installed not 11.0.20.

I am following this website http://prajwaldesai.com/deploy-internet-explorer-11-using-sccm-2012-r2/ or Johan deploymentresearch, but has a same result.

I also tried to extract full ie and run IE-REDIST.exe /quiet /norestart /update-no, no luck.

During install I check ie11-main.log, but there is no error.

How can I install IE 11 with version other than RTM.

THANKS IN ADVANCE.

IE11: Enable addressbar search via GPO

$

Hello,

we have a GPO in use for our IE11. At the moment the search in the adress bar is not working and we would like to get it working again.

As far as I know the following gpo entries are responsible for that:

User Configuration->Administrative Templates->Windows Components->Internet Explorer->Internet Settings->Advanced settings->Searching

Comes out they are configred to allow the search in the address bar; but even if we change the status of both entries to "not configured" nothing is changing. Anything I type in gets a "http://" in front and is not redirected to bing or google... :(

Is there any other GPO rule that can disable the address bar search function or is responsible for the "http://"?

Thanks a lot

Jan
