Registry key for default browser

0
0

Hello all,

I have Win 7 with IE 10 installed. When I set FF or Chrome to be my default browser I find that it updates the value of \\HKCR\.htm, \\HKCR\.html and \\HKCR\http keys in the registry. However when I set IE to be my default browser (either using IE -> Internet Options or Control Panel -> Default Programs) these values are not updated. However Windows is still able to determine that .htm files are to be opened with IE. How does Windows determine that? It must be referring to some registry key. Which one is that?

Please note that I am not asking how to make IE the default browser. I know how to do that. I just want to know how Windows knows that IE is the default browser. There are quite a few posts out there which have an answer but unfortunately none of the answers I found was correct - All answers mention that the \\HKCR\http key is updated which doesn't actually happen.

Thanks and regards,

Pradyumna

Issues with Microsoft E-learning site.

Forgive me if this has appeared twice as I posted yesterday but can't find it.

In our company we have access to the Microsoft Online E-learning site https://onlinelearning.microsoft.com. When the site is accessed all the courses appear but the silver light videos don't display. The time length shows in the bottom left hand side but after a few seconds it resets back to 0:00.

We are running Windows 7 enterprise  IE8 (currently upgrading to 11 but issue also is in this version of the browser as well) and silverlight version 5.1.30514.0. I have been able to get it to run on a couple of machines by running another browser first but with 6500 assets in our enterprise that wouldn't be a lot of fun :) and to be honest i'm not sure made it work setting wise.

I suspect it is something to do with DRM as if I go to the site http://web.sldrm.video.msn.com/d1/sldrm.html the video doesn't run until I turn DRM off.

I added the key in the registry to enable DRM just in case still with no luck. I just find it strange that machines with the same windows image in the same OU logging in with the same account having differing results. I am sure it is a setting but what I'm not sure.

How to create & deploy "Internet Explorer 11" for multiple language Windows 7 Operating systems

0
0

We are in process of deploying "Internet Explorer 11" at my organization.

By default we have created "Internet Explorer 11" English language  using "Internet Explorer Customization Wizard 11" tool kit.

Does it possible to deploy the standard "Internet Explorer 11" application which was generated by "Internet Explorer Customization Wizard 11" tool kit to multiple language Windows 7 operating systems.

the deployed package log file from c:\windows\IE11_main.log (please see the more information at my log file.)

at the moment the method which I am following for an example is ---soon after /during  deploying default English "Internet Explorer 11", this will store the data at  C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\IE12A66.tmp\Windows6.1-KB2841134-x64-fr-FR.cab .

I fetch the "Windows6.1-KB2841134-x64-fr-FR.cab" from  %temp% location ; extract into folder and include in the existing default English "Internet Explorer 11" package for specific French language.

please let us know if we have any best method to follow.

Enabling cookies for all users

Hi,

I am working with IE11.

Is there a way to enable cookies for all users , including new users that will be created later on ?

(I think there was a group policy for this in older IE versions that was removed. Why ?!)

Alternately, is there a way to enable cookies from command line , by a user that is not administrator or in the administrator group ? It's ok if the setting applies just to that user.

Thanks

Memory Drain?

IE is CLOSED..should explorer.exe be using 20,472K ??? I also got an AVG Advisor pop up during a routine scan that Internet Explorer was using a high level of memory (166mB) and advice to restart it...I wasn't even using Internet Explorer...I have both 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Internet Explorer version 9.08112 installed, but rarely use them..I use firefox and Windows 7 home premium 64 bit version...Should Explorer.exe process be running /using memory even tho I'm not using Internet Explorer and should I highlight it and hit the "End Process" button?? Thanks

PS: did sfc scannow (with admin.priv.) and it showed no problems...I right clicked on explorer.exe and hit "go to services" and none of the services were hi-lighted..

Internet Explorer 11 doesn't allow downloads and intermittantly crashes when I try.

Hello,

I have Windows 7, 32 bit on a Dell laptop with 4Gb of RAM.  I've been primarily an IE user all along but I am now using Chrome and Firefox due to problems with IE 10 and 11.  Around the first of the year IE stopped letting me download anything and sometimes crashes after the download bar says "filename could not be downloaded".  I have googled my fingers off and tried every remedy suggested, up to and including booting in safe mode with networking and running IE with no add-ons.  My only assumption is that one of the MS updates is the underlying cause as I haven't made any hardware or software changes.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  Below is the text of one of the crashes from the technical details of the reliability monitor of the action center:

IE11 trying to resolve proxy for DUMMY host on first new tab

Internet Explorer Version 11.0.9600.17420
IE 11.0.14 (KB3003057)
Windows 7 SP1 32bit

While testing IE 11 in offices with slow connections our test users reported strange application hangs when opening the first new tab. The initial load of the home page and all subsequent tabs after the first new one are working just fine.

The hangs will persist for nearly 2 minutes and then IE will load the desired page just fine without any user interaction. It's as if the application hangs somewhere in a loop.

While trying to solve the issue we were able to pinpoint it to our proxy.pac in which we're using the "IsInNet" function to determine if a certain host is in a specific subnet. After a few Wireshark traces we found that when opening the first new tab (and only then) IE 11 will try to resolve the proxy for a host named "DUMMY<00>". Of course we don't have any DNS records for that name so IE seems to fall back to using NBNS. We only have one central NBNS server, so this will cause the delay our remote users noticed (it takes them about five seconds for one request to be handled).

As a workaround we've adjusted our proxy.pac to save the resolved IP of the host to a variable, therefore reducing our name resolution queries from previously 35 to a single one. This doesn't get rid of the hang completely but it helps a lot in that the delay is now more like five seconds than two minutes.

I'm now trying to figure out why IE is querying "DUMMY<00>" in the first place but so far I'm out of ideas. Does anyone have some insight as to why that's happening? Is it a certain setting we need to adjust or is this by design? We've never noticed anything similar with IE 9.

Odd font rendering in IE 8 after update

I'm wondering if Tuesday night's IE security update KB3021952 might have messed the way IE displays text on websites.

When I log into our web-based E-Mail client, SmarterMail, the font looks smaller than usual, and is harder to read. Even making it large. Some letters seem randomly bold, and the letters are all slightly distorted.

This is on Windows Server 2008 64-bit Standard, SP1 and Internet Explorer 8.

I am not seeing the issue in IE11. I am also not seeing it in IE10, or in IE10 with browser mode set to IE8.

Zoom and font settings have not changed.

I get the same effect on major websites such as Google.

Making IE My Homepage...trouble.

I am a novice at Windows 8.1 and I need some help.

I set it up so that when I clicked on the IE tile that it automatically went to my email provider (Cox Cable). It works just fine. The mail sign-in page comes up when I click on the IE tile. The problem is, now I don't want to do that. I already have an icon on the tool bar, so I want to make it so that when I click the IE tile it goes to Internet Explorer and NOT to my email page.

I know how to change my homepage, but in order to do that I have to have the web address for IE in order to paste it in the box to change it to opening to IE instead of my email page.

How do I get the web address for IE or is there another way?

IE 11 blocks access to "Microsoft Update" service

Using Windows Update on Windows 7 SP1, there is an option to enable "Microsoft Update" at the bottom to also update Office and other Microsoft applications:

Get updates for other Microsoft products. Find out more.

,

This opens a webpage, which in IE 10 and earlier, allows me to enable Microsoft Update.

However, IE 11 does not show the page to enable Microsoft Update but shows a useless and unrelated help message:

Use your Start menu to check for updates

How am I supposed to enable the optional Microsoft Update service now?

Internet Explorer Enahanced Security Configuration not turning off

Hello,

I'm running Internet Explorer 11, and I'm trying to disable Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration on a machine running Windows Server 2008 R2.  I have full administrative privileges to the machine, and I can see that the option is disabled for both users and administrators in Server Manager.  I have tried in both 32 and 64 bit versions on Internet Explorer with the same results.

Is there something else I can do to force IE ESC to remain disabled?
