Not only are these obtrusive, computer-seizing, and, in my case, unwanted, auto-updates annoying as hell, after countless updates", my IE still works like crap!

Leave my computer the hell alone Microsoft!

Printer Properties box freezes when printing a pdf from IE10...

$

Hello --

I have a clean install of Win7 Professional (32-bit).. installed Adobe Reader 9.. installed Win7 SP1 and all necessary and recommended updates.. updated Reader to v9.5.5 (this is the only/latest version supported by some of our company software).. There is nothing else installed on this machine.

The problem: When I open IE10, click on a pdf link (the pdf displays properly in the browser), click the Print icon in the upper-left, click Properties in the Print dialog, the Properties dialog comes up and then freezes.  The tabs, buttons, and mouse pointer graphically change, but clicking does nothing.  Clicking the underlying Print dialog box makes the Properties box flash, so it's not totally locked, but just unresponsive to clicks.  The only way to close the dialog box is to stop the iexplore process in taskmgr.  This happens with any printer selected (tested on local and network printers, and even MS XPS Doc Writer, and Fax).

I can save the pdf and print from Reader directly with no problem, and I understand that I can deselect "Display pdfs in browser" in Reader options, however, those workarounds won't satisfy the users.

I'm at a loss as to what could be causing this or how to proceed further in troubleshooting this..  Can anyone lend a hand please?

Thanks.

Can't delete favorites from IE 10 - Windows 8

$

Yesterday out of the blue some old pages from my favorites list reappeared.  I deleted these in the past and now they just showed up.  When I right click on them to delete them or go to organize favorites to delete them, they delete for a few seconds, but then reappear.  I try again and again, but they just keep coming back.  The "favorites bar" in my favorites list does the same thing.  I have also gone to users/profile/favorites to try and delete them and they just come back.

I've run multiple scans with my antivirus software and spybot software, but it didn't fix it.

Anyone know how to fix this or know what the problem could be?  I am not a tech guy, just an average joe, but can get around windows decently.

Thanks for your help.

Actions Tab not working in Picasa Webalbums since upgrading to IE11

Since I upgraded to IE 11 the "Actions " tab in Picasa web albums has not worked. Google is blaming Microsoft. I have to log into Firefox every time I need to delete an album, change front page etc. Any hints on how I can continue using IE 11 which I prefer to FF - I have lots of albums to do and it is beginning to be a big nuisance.  Others are having the same problem and there has been no solution that I can find in any forum.

I posted this in the MS IE forum and after many suggestions that did not work, it was suggested that I post the problem here.

So you can follow the suggestions that didn't work here is the link

It wouldn't let me post a link until I have been "verified"

Thanks!

Unstable Internet Explorer

Does anyone else agree with me that, if there wasn't so much money to be made creating worthless apps, maybe Microsoft could devote more resources towards getting IE to work better?

When surfing news sites, I have to use both IE and Google Chrome so that when one locks up or just refuses to do a task (usually IE), I can switch to the other browser to complete the task.

It's a shame that one browser can't "do it all". And with all the automatic updates I get from Microsoft, you would think something to improve IE would be part of one of these many update "packages".

But what's a little inconvenience to users when you can make a ton of money ignoring them for something more lucrative?

Evidently, in the eyes of Microsoft "Internet Explorer works good enough, thank you!".

Open a website multiple times with different logins.

In Internet Explorer we need to be able to open certain websites multiple times with different logins. We were able to do this until this summer then something changed. Mostly we are using IE 10 but the problem also exists in IE 11. We really don't want to install Google Chrome which supports this functionality because Chrome interferes with other software that we are running.

All and Any suggestions or comments greatly appreciated.

Configuring IE's proxy settings via GPP

$

I am trying to apply proxy settings to our IEs 8, 9, 10 and 11 via Group Policy and found that "Automatically Detect Settings" option in the Group Policy Preferences (GPP) for IE8 and 9 is greyed out for some reason (IE10 is OK). The PC where I edit the GPP is Windows 8.1 and our domain controllers are Windows Server 2008 R2.

I know it is possible to use Registry preferences as described here however I am worried this registry setting might not be compatible with all IEs versions including future versions. I just can't believe the GPP is unable to configure this simple setting for the IE8 browser..

IE failed to generate reports

One of our client is trying to generate reports with lots of
sub reports, its a single page report. If they generate it for 2-3 years
it works for all browsers, but when they generate it for 5 years.
Report works fine in chrome and firefox but IE will not be able to load
reports and show IE window "Internet explorer cannot load page".

There is no errors in eventlog or in IE console. Even Fiddler does
not give any information why IE could not able to load reports. It says
response 200.

Reports are generated successfully, as I can see that in log.

I am not sure why this is happening with IE(8,9,10).

Thanks

Unable to access intenet sites after KB2977629 loaded

I loaded the security updates of September and found that I could initially access my home page on IE but the second time I tried it hung up with the IE saying it was connecting but never getting through. Same problem with any other website. After reading about the updates and the mega update for IE I uninstalled KB2977629 and I was able to access my home site along with any other site with no problem. So I stopped automatic loading so I can prevent this update from being loaded automatically. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix?

Cannot Upgrade IE 8 to IE 11 on older laptop

I have quite a few older laptops most are Dell Inspiron D600's which has worked fine with Windows 7 and upgrading to IE 11.  I have an older Dell Inspiron 9100 that is working with Windows 7 just fine, but won't update to IE 11.  It gets so far in the update and dies saying that it is trying to get an update from Microsoft at this URL: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?LinkId=299206.  I cannot find an update with that number.  I need help updating this system so that my daughter can get her homework done.

Thank You,

Larry

Unable to download using IE 10 or 11

Hello

I have Windows 7 32-bit PC's with full updates. We are on a domain network, however, I have tested the problem as I'm about to describe on my home Windows 7 64-bit PC, and it behaves the same.

Using IE11, I cannot download anything, no messages, no prompts, it's as if the mouse wasn't working (but it is of course). I cannot even open a document from a website, as it needs to be downloaded to the local machine before opening. If I revert to IE9, it works fine. For the longest time, we have been sticking with IE9 for this reason, but are now finding reasons in our environment to update to IE11.

I am a PC tech for a school board. There are about 30 of us that look after 10000+ PC's in 150+ schools. Time is very important to us. We use a program called 'Deepfreeze' by Faronics. It allows us to lockdown the pc's without having to set multitudes of options. The user can do anything they like to the software & data on the C: drive, but when the PC reboots it goes back to it's last 'frozen' state, the pc's shutdown every night at 6:00.

When we need to make a change, we login as ourselves (i.e. Tech), turn off Deepfreeze, make our change (i.e. install new printer), turn on deepfreeze. We have the regkey [HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList] Default= set to 'Tech' (rather than the 'Default' user). When the user logs in they get a copy of our trimmed down profile with changes. This saves us from having to copy our profile to the 'Default' user every time we make a change. When the computer shuts down, the users profile disappears (via DeepFreeze), and the next time they login they get another fresh profile.

What we have found is that when the above regkey is set to 'Tech' and we are logged in as 'Tech' we can't download anything. When the regkey is set to anything other than 'Tech' and we login, IE works fine. When the regkey is Tech, and anybody else logs in, IE works fine. Of course, it is a major obstacle when the regkey is tech and we are logged in, we can't download anything to make our profile changes. Firefox and Chrome work fine in all situations.

My educated guess seems that it is a folder rights issue, but can't pinpoint it.

Any suggestions/insight would be appreciated.

When opening an XPS file, IE hangs. Task manager shows XPSViewer.exe taking 50% of CPU.

$

I've seen this twice now on older XP machines (sadly, some of my users DO have to run XP) so I figured I should document it, if only because the fix is so non-intuitive.

By default, XPS documents open in IE with a helper called XPSViewer.exe. You can also open them in a separate standalone viewer by installing the Microsoft XPS Essentials thing
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=11816
But that doesn't work in IE, and my users needed it to.

Sometimes, users report that when they open an XPS file, the browser hangs. Checking task manager shows that XPSViewer.exe is taking up 50% of CPU cycles. Ending the process allows IE to respond, but the document is not displayed.

The first hint at a solution was from:
http://discussions.citrix.com/topic/273861-cannot-open-xps-files/

"This issue occurs because the non-administrator user account cannot access the %WINDIR%\System32 folder. By default, WPF writes the output file to the %WINDIR%\System32 folder. The %WINDIR%\System32 folder requires administrator permissions. When the non-administrator account tries to access this folder, the WPF caching code is triggered. This code causes the screen to flicker.

In 32-bit versions of the Windows Server 2003 operating system, the output file is D3d9caps.dat. In 64-bit versions of the Windows Server 2003 operating system, the output file is D3d9caps64.dat. "

It got me thinking that maybe i could modify the rights to the file instead of applying the hotfix...
After doing that the user could open the .xps file successfully!. But after closing the xps (internet explorer uses xpsviewer.exe to display the file) the file d3d9caps.dat disappeared from the system32 folder...

The next time the .xps file was opened by the user, the d3d9caps.dat file was not created in system32 folder as one might expect, but instead in the more appropriate path "...Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data" folder.

So in fact, all i had to do to fix this problem was deleting/renaming the d3d9caps.dat file in the system32 folder.

So all you have to do is delete (or for safety, rename) that d3d9caps.dat file and try again! Works a treat!
