Internet Explorer SSL/TLS settings disabled

$

Recently, we ran a pilot where FIPS-compliance mode was enabled on Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 32-bit computers.  Specifically, the "System cryptography: Use FIPS-compliant algorithms for encryption, hashing, and signing" security option was set to Enabled.  The pilot is over and we turned off FIPS-compliance mode.

Since doing that, I have noticed that the SSL/TLS settings in Internet Explorer 9 are disabled on computers that were part of the pilot.  I know the defaults are:

  • SSL 2.0 : off
  • SSL 3.0 : on
  • TLS 1.0 : on
  • TLS 1.1 : off
  • TLS 1.2 : off

Now, all of these settings are disabled (grayed out) and the following settings are set:

  • SSL 2.0 : on
  • SSL 3.0 : on
  • TLS 1.0 : on
  • TLS 1.1 : off
  • TLS 1.2 : off

This affects all user accounts on the system.

The test GPO we used to turn on FIPS mode for these computers has been verified to only be enforcing that FIPS setting.  It was not controlling any Internet Explorer settings.

Here is the troubleshooting I have done so far:

  • Reset Internet Explorer via the Reset button on the Advanced tab in Internet Options.
  • Put computer in an OU that had Group Policy inheritance blocked, performed gpupdate, and rebooted to ensure no GPOs were affecting the computer.
  • Verified that local policy was not enforcing the Internet Explorer SSL/TLS settings.
  • Ran msconfig, disabled non-Microsoft services, and rebooted.
  • Removed the Internet Explorer feature, rebooted, re-added it, and rebooted.
  • Installed all available important and recommended Windows Updates.
  • Installed Internet Explorer 11.
  • Created a new local account and set it to Administrator and logged in as that.
  • Removed the computer from the domain.
  • Created another local account (with Administrator rights) and logged in as that while the computer was not on a domain.
  • Ran the command from an elevated command prompt:  secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose
  • As a last-ditch effort, I ran CCLeaner and performed all the Clean and Registry fixes available.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

Unable to print using Internet Explorer, Printer error 49. 4C02 - Error

Hi Guys,

In our org. recently the intranet portal is being launched having webpages built using Html5 & CSS3, everything seemed to be working fine until we had this issue of printing via all Internet Explorer browser version.

Issue Description:

Couple of symptoms of the issues when trying to print.

  1. The printer name is invalid (res://ieframe.dll/preview.js)
  2. The remote server machine does not exist or is unavailable (res://ieframe.dll/preview.js)
  3. Whenever print is fired the printer goes in hung state, we have to power off and power on the same

Observation:

  1. The same webpage when we try to print using Mozilla firefox / Google chrome there is no issue
  2. The print model is HP LaserJet M4345 MFP series
  3. The printer is installed using TCP configuration on member server and the printer is shared for client PCs(Windows7/8.1)
  4. As soon as the print is fired on the server where printer is configured observe event ID 10 which states print was successful
    1. Document 161, URL - website owned by UserA was printed on HP LaserJet 4345 mfp - IT PCL 6 via port IP_10.14.1.132. Size in bytes: 499992; pages printed: 1
  5. We also tested the print on several other printer model like Lexmark and the issue is same.
  6. If the printer is configured locally using USB and tried to print – print is successful
  7. If we print to XPS doc, it prints properly using IE for that page
  8. Tried to trace what’s happening using netmon when print is fired using IE and below is the screenshot

  1. Came across this registry thing while troubleshooting and didn’t know how it could relate to the issue while deep diving into netmon logs   (ms724884)
    1. REG_DWORD_LITTLE_ENDIAN

Action Taken:

  1. KB 2511250 / 308260 / 2652062  - didn’t worked
  2. Installed hotfixes on windows 7 PC KB2028560 / KB2454826 / KB2028551 – didn’t worked
  3. logged case with HP Support – updated the drivers UPD PS – didn’t worked (still working on it)
  4. enabled / disabled script debugging on IE advanced settings – didn’t worked
  5. turned on / off protected mode – didn’t worked
  6. tried running in 32/64bit version – didn’t worked
  7. tried running in run as administrator mode – didn’t worked
  8. registered IE dlls with regards to print – didn’t worked
  9. reinstalled IE – didn’t worked

It seems when print is fired the job is sent to server and as soon as the server spooled the print job in to printer, the printer used to get hung.

Printer queue would show the status as printing but won’t print, if we don’t cancel the job the printer after powered ON would again go into hung state.

Would appreciate for your prompt response on the above issue mentioned and do revert for more queries, any points/step if I have missed.

Setting IE search providers via GP

$

Good Afternoon,

All my users are on a Win7x64 platform with a Win 2008 R2 STD domain controller. I am trying to set google as the default search provider for all our users via group policy.

I have followed the steps in the following article -

http://blogofanitadmin.blogspot.de/2011/05/group-policy-changing-default-search.html

I have gone through the whole article and have also adhered to the comments/feedback at the bottom of the blog. Despite this, after doing a gpupdate /force on my test machine and restarting it the default search provider is still Bing. I really dont want to have to go around to each machine manually and set google as the default search provider.

Just a little further information - the policy is setup with following settings -

User Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Internet Explorer

  • Add a specific list of search providers to the users search provider list (ENABLED)
  • Turn off the Security Settings Check feature (ENABLED)

and

User Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Classic Administrative Templates (ADM) > Windows Components > Internet Explorer

  • Select search providers to be included in policy based search list (ENABLED)

After applying the policy I run gpupdate /force on the test machine and restart it. I then run RSOP on the test machine and then drill down as follows -

User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Internet Explorer

Neither of the settings that I have enabled above are present.

Can anyone tell me where I might be going wrong.

IE11: Unable to enable TLS 1.1 and 1.2

I have recently been testing Windows in FIPS-compliance mode for compliance with a common security policy mandated by a state government agency.  This included my assigned laptop, which is running Windows 8.1 Update Enterprise x64.

As part of the test, I enabled the "System cryptography: Use FIPS 140 compliant cryptographic algorithms, including encryption, hashing and signing algorithms" both in local security policy on my machine and later via a test GPO.  Since that test has completed, I have deleted the GPO and disabled the setting in local security policy.  I've also rebooted several times to verify the setting is truly disabled and also tried creating a GPO that forces that setting to disabled.

What I am seeing is, since performing these tests, I can no longer enable TLS 1.1 or 1.2 on IE11.  They were previously enabled.  The settings for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1, and TLS 1.2 are all grayed out.  SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, and TLS 1.0 are checked (and cannot be unchecked) and TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 are unchecked (and cannot be checked).

Suspecting group policy, I put my user account and computer account in an OU that has group policy inheritance blocked and made a GPO that only forces SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1, and TLS 1.2 on for my user account and applied it to my test GPO.  The particular setting is Policies | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Internet Explorer | Internet Control Panel | Advanced Page | Turn off encryption support | Use SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1, and TLS 1.2.  I ran gpupdate /force, rebooted, checked local security policy to confirm that my laptop is not in FIPS mode, then checked the IE11 advanced options and there was no change.

How can I get TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 back?

EMIE - Remote Desktop Services with Mandatory Profile

$

We're currently testing out EMIE at my company. I'm able to set EMIE sites through Group Policy by creating a .xml file with the Enterprise Mode Site List Manager. This all works great but when an individual sets a site to Enterprise Mode manually through Tools > Enterprise Mode where is this information stored? This is important to our environment because we use Remote Desktop Services/Mandatory Profiles. I'd like these settings to follow users when they work remotely but this is impossible to do so without information as to how it's stored.

Here is what I know so far:

The information is stored in the User Profile but it is not stored in HKEY_CURRENT_USER. I know this because I've compared a HKCU without a site manually set to EM to a HKCU with a site set to EM.

Resetting IE to default settings after manually applying EM to a site does not clear EM on that site.

This thread: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/ie/en-US/6c266558-a7f0-4169-a0a7-668899b1653e/ie-11-enterprise-mode-on-remote-desktop-server?forum=ieitprocurrentver

Asks the same question but it's not being answered. The OP Jonas_Bson pointed out the location of two folders and files that are created when EMIE is Enabled. These paths are AppData\Local\EmieSiteList & AppData\Local\EmieUserList. Both locations have a container.dat file that are 0KB. Regardless if sites are added / removed from EM the file stays at 0KB and the date created and modified time stamps never change. However, if I set a site manually to EM, delete the container.dat file in the EmieUserList location, relaunch the browser, the site manually set in EM no longer in EM. I created a container.dat file with EM set, and a container.dat file with EM not set. If I replace the container.dat file with EM set with the container.dat file with EM not set, EM is not applied to the page that was manually set. It appears this container.dat file is just some sort of place holder to use saved settings but is not where the settings are saved.

If anyone has found the location to where manually EM settings are stored, please let me know.

Eclipse 3.7, 3.8, 4.2 crashes with IE11 and kb2977629 installed

Since the IE11 security update kb2977629 got installed, eclipse 3.7, 3.8 and 4.2 are now crashing with the java hs_err_pidxxx.log pointing to some updated IE dlls. When uninstalling kb2977629 the issues goes away.

This happens for me on multiple windows 7 Pro 64 bit build machines. We test the compatibility of our plugins with

multiple eclipse versions, the issue only happens with 3.7, 3.8 and 4.2.2 (and not with the more current releases 4.3 or 4.4).

Eclipse uses the IE plugin to render some HTML pages, for example on the welcome screen which is shown initially. The crash does not happen every time, but actually quite often.Call stack from a hs_err_pidxxx.log

No option to Open downladed file - just Save As or Cancel options

If you want to download any the of files in IE11 there is no option to OPEN the file. Only two options are to SAVE or Cancel no option to OPEN.

The question: Is there a way to set IE11 via GPO to show the OPEN option in addition to SAVE and Cancel options.

Favorites in folder in Favorites bar not in own order after expanding favorites bar.

Hi,

I have folders in the Favorites bar and I have ordered the items withint the folder by drag and drop according to their importance to me.

But I have a high number of favorites and all of them can not be shown in the normal window. So I have to click on the arrows on the right sideof the Favorites Bar to expand and see all my favorites. When I do that and click on a folder, the order of the items is alphabetic and not in the order I had arranged before, which makes more difficult to me to find the links I want.

It has different behavior when the folder is directly visible on the window and when the favorites bar has to be extended.

I have IE9, can that be fixed, or has been fixed in later versions?

Thanks, Julio

Internet Explorer 11 UAC and Running in elevated Mode

$

Hi All,

We are in the process of upgrading from IE 8 to IE 11. I have hit a strange problem that is preventing IE 11 browsing to any web site within the "Internet" zone.

IE 11 can access any site within the Intranet or Trusted Sites zone, regardless of their location. For example, we have some Internet sites within the Trusted Sites zone. These sites are rendered without issue and are accessed using the same proxy chain as sites that fall within the "Internet" zone.

If the UAC is disabled or if Internet Explorer is run under elevated privileges IE 11 works as expected and renders all web sites regardless of which zone they are associated with. I believe the issue may be related to IE's "Protected Mode" which is disabled for the Intranet and Trusted Sites zone and enabled on the "Internet" zone. Running IE as Administrator, I believe, disables IE's Protected Mode feature.

Our fleet of machines running IE 8 do not exhibit these same symptoms. For testing consistency all of the computers running IE 11 live within the same AD OU as the machines running IE 8. The same is true for our test accounts, i.e. Both IE 8 and IE 11 machines share the same Group Policy objects. The only difference is that we are using Group Policy Preferences to provide IE 11 with proxy settings.

If anyone has a suggested it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

Nathan

IE8 doesn't display when opened on Server 2003 SP2

Internet Explorer starts the iexplore.exe process and begins to use CPU and memory but never displays. Security patches refuse to apply to IE 8 on this server. Tried reinstalling/repairing IE8 but received the message "Operating System not supported." Tried the same in Safe Mode as well. IE 8 does not show up as an installed feature but still appears to be present throughout the system.

Any ideas?

Sep 2014 patch kb2977629 ms14-052 breaks certificate error continuation in IE8 Win7 x64

Greetings,

During extensive testing we have found that after applying patch MS14-052 on win 7 x64 IE8 machines, it breaks the certificate error continuation. When accessing certain websites we get a certificate error (x-domain issues) and then we click "Continue to website...." and it brings up a logon screen. This is normal behaviour for us. After the patch is applied, when we hit "Continue to website..." IE8 goes into a continuous loop and the screen flashes repeatedly. Therefore we have recommended not to install this patch.

Removing old GPO settings

My old work computer has been removed from its previous domain, and should now work as my private computer. The problem is that some old GPO settings are reemerging when I restart the computer. The way I can tell that it’s still there is that I’m unable to change startup page in Internet Explorer.

I’ve tried removing the following from the registry:

  • HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft Key (looks like a folder).
  • HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft Key.
  • HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Group Policy Objects Key.
  • HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policiess Key.

This allows me to change the startup page, but after restarting my machine all these settings are back.

I’m not using a domain user to log on to the machine, but a new local account.

Turn off outdated ActiveX controls for specific domains GPO isn't working

$

I really like the new feature to block outdated ActiveX controls as it makes our computers a lot safer since we are stuck with old Java versions for various corporate applications. However I have found that the GPO policy named "Turn off blocking of outdated AcitveX controls for Internet Explorer on specific domains" is not working in our environment. I have entered several variations on one of the domain names I want to be allowed to run the old Java version, however IE9 and IE10 continue to display the message that Java is out of date. We have enabled the "Remove "Run this time" button for outdated ActiveX controls in Internet Explorer" to prevent unwitting users from allowing an infected website to take advantage of Java, so perhaps that is part of the problem. Has anyone else gotten this GPO working?
